Foot Pain Q&A

What is foot pain?

Foot pain is a generic term to describe a host of conditions and issues that cause pain and discomfort. Because the foot is so highly complex, foot pain can strike any number of places, but largely affects these four areas: the ball of the foot, the heel, the arch, or the toes.

While there’s an exhaustive list of conditions that may affect the foot, the more common culprits under each area of the foot might include:

Heel pain:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heel spur
  • Stone bruise
  • Heel fracture

Pain in the ball of the foot
:

  • Metatarsalgia or stone bruise
  • Morton’s neuroma -- tissue thickens around the nerves in the base of the toes
  • Sesamoiditis -- tendonitis around the big toe

Arch pain
:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Fallen arches

Toe pain
:

  • Gout
  • Bunions
  • Hammertoes
  • Claw toes
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Toe sprains
  • Fracture
  • Calluses and corns

On a broader scale, certain nerve conditions or tendonitis can affect the whole foot.

When should I see a doctor?

Since the feet are arguably two of the most important parts of the body, even minor discomfort can hamper your mobility and bears medical intervention. You should make an appointment with Dr. Babalola if any of the following is present:

  • Pain and swelling
  • Inability to bear weight
  • Signs of infection like redness, tenderness, swelling, or fever
  • If you have diabetes
  • If there’s an open wound

With a thorough examination and testing, Dr. Babalola can diagnose the source of the problem and get you started on a treatment right away.

What are the common treatments for foot pain?

Because of the sheer number of problems that may arise in the foot, there’s no single treatment. If you are experiencing any pain in the foot, you should try the following:

  • Rest the foot
  • Ice the foot
  • Take anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen

If the pain persists or the swelling doesn’t go down, and you are having trouble moving around, you should call to make an appointment. Depending on the cause of the problem, Dr. Babalola has a number of tools to help combat foot pain, including, but not limited to:

  • Orthotics
  • Cortisone injections
  • Exercises
  • Stretches
  • Surgery
  • Medications
